In Venezuela the number of snakebites is too high, the production of antivenom is very low, its distribution is precarious and prices have risen excessively, leaving a huge range for the black market development. That is why the Vivarium Foundation has created a  Antivenom Bank in the intention of helping the victims.

Through your valuable help we can equip the antivenom bank

In Venezuela around 7,000 people are bitten by poisonous snakes each year, on average at least 2 anti-venom kits are required for each bite victim, the only anti-venom producer in the country only produces around 5,000 kits per year.

Snakebite crisis

What fills the void?

Some of the antivenoms used in Venezuela are produced in other countries, and some of them, while cheap and attractive, are for veterinary use. Experts say veterinary products can have dangerous side effects when used on humans.

Another penalty for poverty

The high cost and limited availability of the antidote in Venezuela make treatment difficult, leading to complications occurring more frequently. Some have called snakebite "another penalty for poverty."

Psychological Effects

The psychological effects of snakebite envenomation are poorly studied, but there is evidence that they cause long-term psychological sequelae, and the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder is comparable to that observed after major natural disasters.

Snake bites are a daily concern in the agricultural fields. The average farmer fears snake bites more than contracting malaria, tuberculosis or HIV/AIDS.

The World Health Organization

In 2017, the WHO added snakebite to its list of neglected tropical diseases "in category A"

After years of being a globally ignored and hidden problem, snakebite now has the opportunity to receive funding and advocacy. Governments of countries must now support the WHO to bring about effective change. However, far from improving this situation, Venezuela is the country on the entire continent that contributes the most to the global burden of the snakebite crisis.

Vivarium Foundation

The Vivarium Foundation is a non-profit NGO, dedicated to:

  • Environmental Education.

  • Snake Accident Prevention.

  • Help and advice for people who have been bitten.

  • Poison Bank. (PROJECT)

With the support of toxicology specialists, we help doctors and family members try to connect the problem with the solution.

Unlike other serious diseases, snake bites have a quick and effective solution , that solution is the antidote.
