FAMILY
(BOIE, 1827)
The family Elapidae includes the true coral snakes present in Venezuela. They are venomous snakes with proteroglyphous dentition and predominantly neurotoxic venom, of high medical relevance.
Despite their potential danger, Venezuelan elapids are generally cryptic, discreet, and non-aggressive animals.
They prefer to avoid contact with humans, and most accidents occur due to direct handling or attempts at capture.
They display striking aposematic coloration that serves as a natural warning. Ecologically, Elapidae plays an important role as a specialized predator. Education and proper identification are essential to prevent accidents and reduce mortality associated with fear and misinformation.
