GENUS
Amerotyphlops
(Hedges et al., 2014)
The genus Amerotyphlops comprises snakes with strictly subterranean habits, adapted to environments where light is virtually absent. They have cylindrical bodies, smooth scales, and very reduced eyes covered by scales, reflecting their specialization for a fossorial lifestyle. They are completely harmless and lack venom.
Their diet is based mainly on social insects such as ants and termites, as well as other small soil invertebrates. Due to their cryptic behavior, they are rarely observed on the surface, and most encounters with humans occur accidentally.
They play an important role in regulating soil insect populations and maintaining soil dynamics. Although rarely seen, they are an essential part of the ecosystems they inhabit, with habitat degradation and soil disturbance representing their main threats.
