GENUS

Anilius

(Roze, 1958)

The genus Anilius is represented by a single species, making it a unique group within Venezuelan snake fauna. These snakes have primarily subterranean and semi-fossorial habits, are rarely observed on the surface, and are associated with humid environments featuring soft soils and abundant leaf litter.

They have a cylindrical, glossy body with a coloration pattern that superficially resembles true coral snakes, although they lack venom and pose no danger to humans. This resemblance is one of the main reasons they are often mistaken for venomous species and killed by mistake. Their behavior is discreet and non-aggressive. They feed on small vertebrates and other soil organisms, playing an important ecological role in forest ecosystems.

The presence of the genus Anilius is usually associated with relatively well-preserved environments and may serve as a biological indicator of habitat quality.
