GENUS
Liotyphlops
(Peters, 1881)
The genus Liotyphlops comprises small fossorial snakes with a cylindrical body, smooth scales, and a head barely differentiated from the neck. These features allow them to move easily underground, where they carry out nearly all their activity.
They are non-venomous, calm, and completely harmless snakes. Their diet consists mainly of soil-associated invertebrates, making them natural regulators of these populations. Despite their adaptation to different types of substrate, their subterranean lifestyle means they are rarely observed on the surface.
Ecologically, Liotyphlops contributes to the balance of soil ecosystems. Habitat loss and soil disturbance represent more significant threats than direct human interaction, which generally occurs accidentally.
