Boa
GENUS

Boa

(Linnaeus, 1758)

The genus Boa comprises constrictor snakes with strong, muscular bodies, characterized by their great adaptability to different ecosystems. In Venezuela, they occur in humid forests, savannas, and even areas modified by humans, which explains their frequent encounters with human populations.

They are non-venomous snakes that hunt by constriction, feeding mainly on mammals and birds. They are mostly nocturnal or crepuscular and generally calm in behavior, although they may defend themselves if threatened. Ecologically, the genus Boa plays a fundamental role as a regulator of rodent populations, contributing to ecosystem balance. Despite their size and imposing appearance, they pose no medical danger to humans, and their persecution is often driven by myths and misinformation.
