GENUS
Epicrates
(Wagler, 1830)
The genus Epicrates comprises medium-sized boas with a wide diversity of patterns and coloration, often varying by region. They are non-venomous constrictor snakes that occupy a broad range of habitats, from dry forests to humid areas and savannas.
They are primarily nocturnal and more active than other boas, moving both on the ground and in low vegetation. Their diet includes small mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles.
Ecologically, Epicrates plays an important role in controlling prey populations and serves as a key species in fragmented ecosystems. It is often mistaken for dangerous snakes, which exposes it unnecessarily to human persecution.
