GENUS
Siagonodon
(Peters, 1881)
The genus Siagonodon comprises small snakes highly specialized for subterranean life. They have a cylindrical body, a poorly differentiated head, and anatomy designed for efficient burrowing and underground movement.
They are completely harmless to humans and feed on small soil-associated invertebrates, especially social insects.
Due to their cryptic lifestyle, records of this genus are scarce and usually accidental.
Ecologically, Siagonodon contributes to the regulation of soil invertebrate communities and the maintenance of soil structure. Its conservation depends directly on substrate stability and the preservation of minimally disturbed natural environments.
